Maryann Thielen Zivic is president-elect of the Orinda-Moraga-Lafayette mega-branch of the American Association of University Women. She writes, "I still carry my J-school Three O'clock Club membership card. How many others are still around?" 1960 Ronald E. Purdue recently retired from Georgia-Pacific Corporation after 30 years, where he was director of marketing communications for paper products. He is currently running a freelance business in advertising and public relations services. Patricia Treece has a new book, Mornings with Therese of Lisieux (Servant Press). Her column about saints has been picked up by two more magazines. 1966 Patricia A. (Koval) O'Brien's third novel, Good Intentions (Simon & Schuster), hit the stores this summer. She is currently writing a non-fiction book on friendship (with co-author Ellen Goodman) and working on a fourth novel. 1967 Mike Sullivan has been named director of corporate communications for Potlatch Corporation, a forest products corporation headquartered in Spokane. He has been communications manager for the company's Idaho regional operations for the past eight and a half years. His new position includes corporate media relations, employee communications, speech writing, the company's annual report and other corporate communications functions. 1970 William R. Hunter was elected president of Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association 1997-98 at its July conference in Ashland. He is also president of the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival. 1973 Joseph A. Haran, Jr. recently retired after years of magazine, newspaper, radio and television journalism. He keeps active with work for Vietnam Veterans of America Incorporated; Humanists of the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area; Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company; and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Portland Medical Center. 1974 John R. Soennichsen recently earned a master's in creative writing from Eastern Washington University. He has had more than 60 articles, interviews, essays and short stories published over the past ten years. He is currently marketing a screenplay, a historical novel and a collection of personal essays on Death Valley. 1975 Drex Heikes is the assignment editor in Washington, D.C. for the Los Angeles Times. He is directing coverage of U.S. foreign policy and of the Justice Department and the Supreme Court. 1977 After working six years in media relations at the Oregon Legislature, Michael A. Kesten is now a communications director for the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association. He has launched a home business, Big Yellow Publishing, which publishes the Oregon Media Directory and the Washington Media Directory. From his home office in Idaho, Dwight Schuh is the editor of Bowhunter magazine, the largest archery magazine in the world. He also writes the "Bows & Arrows" column for Sports and Field magazine and has written nine books on hunting, archery and backcountry travel. 1979 After being news director for both TV and radio, Philip W. Cook is now doing marketing for a financial firm in Portland. He has written his first book, Abused Men: The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence from Greenwood/Praeger, due out in September. 1980 Jerry Drelling, anchor/reporter for KGMB-TV in Honolulu, Hawaii, recently received an award for investigative reporting from the Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. 1981 Ven-Hwei Lo is professor and chair of the Department of Journalism, National Chengchi University, Taipei, Taiwan. He holds a Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Missouri. He is the author of three books and many studies on journalism in Taiwan. Daniel R. Browning (MA) won Minnesota's most prestigious journalism award, the Premack Award for Public Affairs Reporting, as well as SPJ's first and second place awards for investigative reporting and first place for spot news. He also won from AP second place in the state for investigative reporting. Videomaking as a career is becoming a major interest to high school students in Southern Oregon, where Steve McDonald is piloting a two-year, vocationally certified course of study. Students will have the opportunity to pursue their interests in varied facets of video production, both technical and artistic. He writes: "More and more students will be looking for educational and career openings in this area." 1983 Aaron Douglas is working in Portland for Lane Powell Spears Lubersky LLP as Marketing Administrator. Caroline Petrich is Marketing Director of Oregon Business Media, a publishing company based in Portland. She is responsible for directing marketing strategies for Oregon Business magazine, Business@Home magazine (of which John Knowlton '74 is founder/editor), the Oregon Business Channel, and its numerous other custom publications. 1984 Michael A. Kiriazis has been marketing director for Portland Brewing Co. for the past three years. He and his wife, AnneMarie, have two children, Alex (2-and-a-half years) and Nicole (newborn). 1985 Tod F. Jones is working for the Costco Connection, a U.S. monthly, Canadian bi-monthly (English and French versions), and U.K. quarterly small-business/lifestyle magazine. In addition to feature writing, he is in charge of writing advertising copy, mail order, catalog copy and promotional pieces. 1986 Derek Kiyota is an American Airlines flight service instructor in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. Samuel E. Marsh is currently a news director/announcer for two of southern Oregon's top radio stations, KAJO-1270 AM and KLDR 98.3 FM. He has worked for Grants Pass Broadcasting Corp. for the past two years. Laura C. Simic was promoted to Director of Planned Giving for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. She is also a new member of the Board of Trustees of the Mortar Board National Honor Society Foundation. 1987 William J. Schaller is curently a public information officer for Harvard Medical School in Boston. He has been working for Harvard Medical School for the past seven years. 1988 John H. Henrikson is leaving his job as a reporter at the Statesman Journal in Salem and heading for sunnier skies as editorial page editor of The Bulletin in Bend. Pamela Damesek Franklin is the local sales manager at the CBS Radio Station, KYCY AM/FM in San Francisco. Pamela, her husband Michael, and their two year old daughter Summer, look forward to the birth of their son/brother in September. 1989 Erin (O'Shea) Holland has worked at Waggener Edstrom for the last eight years. As account manager, she heads up public relations for Microsoft Operating Systems. Erin and husband Bernie are the proud parents of twins, born April 1, and a three-year-old daughter. 1990 Andrea Burns left her position as a graphic designer for Bozell Worldwide Advertising in Chicago to become a freelance full-time web site designer. Her goal is to eventually become a creative director. Maureen Bernadelli is the media director at Cole & Weber in Portland. 1991 Jennifer D. Archer has a new job in downtown Portland as marketing assistant for Pacific Gateway, an international air consolidator. Chris Bouneff is enjoying his new job as a public relations officer/journalist in the news services department at Boise State University. His wife, Stephanie Holland, '90, manages the Technical Communication group in the Information Technology department at Micron Electronics, a computer manufacturer. The couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary Aug. 10. After working six years for KLSR in Eugene, Duane S. Hanson was promoted to WBTV in Roseburg. He has currently started his own business, exporting to Japan. In his spare time he goes to school, writes and acts. Michael S. Springer will be studying for a year at the University of Tubingen in Germany. He is currently pursuing his master's degree in history. Angie D. Stephenson-Morse married Landon Morse on June 27, 1997. She has worked for Kaiser Permanente in Portland for five years designing newletters, brochures and ads. "Absolutely love it!" Susannah L. Bodman has joined the Woodburn Independent as news editor. She previously worked as a reporter for the East Oregonian in Pendleton and as a news assistant for the Statesman Journal in Salem. 1993 Jennifer R. Horton Werdel is expecting a child in September. She is currently a teacher, chef, domestic boss and mom. She writes: "I still miss advertising but am thrilled to stay home for now." Vegar Stokset is a court and crime reporter in the 14th largest newspaper of Norway, Varden of Telemark. Libby Dowsett recently left her position as 5:00/6:00 anchor at the NBC station in Medford, Ore. She accepted a position at the NBC station in Reno, Nev. She reports live and "loves it." 1994 Peter J. Alfrey is an Account Executive at Dave and Bairey Communications in San Francisco. Angela L. Hamel-Windheim has been the public relations manager for Intel Corporation in Portland for three years. She and her husband, Brian Windheim, had their first child, Benjamin, on March 13. Rita-Lyn (Suchanek) Sanders is the higher education reporter at the Corvallis Gazette-Times. She writes: "I may be buried in Beavers, but I've still got webbed feet." Stacy M. Mitchell Wenzl is a Graphic Artist for USWest Dex in Portland. Stacy recently married a fellow UO grad, David Wenzl and reports that they are "very happy." James A. Walugembe is employed by the local daily newspaper, Bukedde, in Uganda. He is the feature writer and in charge of the foreign page. His wife, Allen Walugembe, and four children, Eddie, Jackie, Raymond and Loy, are all doing well. 1995 Alistair M. Campbell is finishing his first year in Portland as an assistant media planner at Wieden & Kennedy working on the Nike account. He is working long hours but having "lots of fun!" Peter Keller is working for Waggener Edstrom, in Portland, doing public relations for the Microsoft Corporation account. Tiffini D. Mueller is full-time producer at KOIN-TV. She is also active in the Portland UO Alumni Association Chapter as communications chair. 1996 Matthew J. Williams recently became the assistant editor at Rip City Magazine, the official publication of the Portland Trail Blazers. Jean M. Bond is sports reporter for Beaverton Valley Times. She is responsible for covering sports in Beaverton, Tigard and Tualatin for Community Newspapers, Inc. Alexander K. Denison is a multimedia news producer for KMTR in Eugene. He is also producing, writing, filming and editing an 80-minute film. Kenneth Lee is an account executive with Metro Broadcast Corp., Ltd. in Hong Kong. Jeremy Miller is a reporter with the Sapient Health Network, an on-line medical magazine (http://www.shn.net). He writes: "The managing editor said he was very impressed by the quality of my writing and the reporting skills I had for a kid straight out of school. I got the job, the raise, and a whole mess of stock options. These are all good things, but the one true great thing is I AM GETTING PAID TO WRITE!" Lenore M. Pointer recently finished her internship through the University's Global Graduates program, which took her to Tec de Monterrey in Queretaro, QRO, Mexico as a PR Intern. She just accepted a position as events coordinator with Up With People, a non-profit international/educational program in which students from around the world perform the "festival," stay with host families and do community service.
