The School's annual summer journalism workshop was held this year
from June 15-21. Students learned from industry professionals
and School faculty before producing The Mercury, a 16-page tabloid
newspaper.
Special thanks are due to Fred Stickel, publisher of The Oregonian,
for ensuring the success of the 1997 Summer High School Journalism
Workshop. The Oregonian, through the Newhouse Foundation, provided
a generous grant that supported the workshop this year and will
carry it forward through 1999.
Thanks are also due the four Oregon newspapers that provided
professional mentors during the workshop week. For Grant Butler,
Lisa Daniels, Michael Ottey, Osker Spicer and Steve Johnson,
the workshop was a repeat performance.
Special thanks go to graduate students Anne Burnett and Kathy
Campbell and to chaperones Erica Pereira and Jack Orozco.
Others who helped out behind the scenes were Etta Howard, Maggie
Young, Linda Manley and Joyce Brinton of the office staff of
the School of Journalism and Communication and Mick Westrick,
the School's director of instructional technology.
