Thomas Layton Jeffries '87 Fellow officers on the Portland Police force remember Thomas Layton Jeffries, '87, a magna cum laude graduate of the School of Journalism and Communication, as an "unflappable" policeman, a kind, conscientious and cool-headed professional who they often turned to for help writing their reports. Sadly, Jeffries was shot to death July 21 in the line of duty, while pursuing a man who had just shot and seriously wounded a 7-year-old boy. He was 35. Jeffries, a native of Roseburg, began his career in law enforcement as a reserve sheriff's deputy for Polk County in 1990. In February 1991, he began working as a corrections officer -- with some of the state's most dangerous felons -- at the Oregon State Penitentiary's Intensive Management Unit. He was hired by the Portland Police Bureau in December of 1992. During his career with the Police Bureau, he received ten commendations and letters of appreciation. Funeral services were held in July in Portland. David Lobb '56 David Lobb, a 1956 graduate of the School of Journalism and Communication, died of cancer in Dallas on March 24. After graduating from the UO, Lobb worked as a crime reporter for the Oregonian. He later moved to New York City and joined the public relations department of British Overseas Airways Corporation. He eventually became director of public relations and marketing for American Airlines. After his retirement, he worked in public affairs for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. A member of Sigma Delta Chi, the Overseas Press Club and the Society of American Travel Writers, he also served as a reporter/editor in the Korean War. |
