The School was proud to announce its inaugural class for the Hall of Achievement on Oct. 22 at a celebration at the Valley River Inn. The event honored the 14 graduates and faculty members whose distinguished careers and lifetime accomplishments exemplify the School's tradition of excellence in journalism education. A reception was sponsored by The Register-Guard. Even after the emotional Hall of Achievement dinner, visiting alums were up early for the ethics symposium titled, "Feeding Frenzies, Sound Bites and Responsibility: Journalism Ethics in the '90s." Held in Allen Hall, the panel discussion was led by Patsy Smullin of California Oregon Broadcasting, Mike Fancher of The Seattle Times, Professor Tom Bivins of the School of Journalism and Communication, Dan Wieden of Wieden & Kennedy and Neal Rosen of Kalt Rosen and Assoc. Enthusiastic alumni and friends filled every seat. Students led tours of Allen Hall throughout the day, introducing many visitors to the electronic media center, student services center and the impressive computer labs. Past and present Oregon Daily Emerald staffers gathered for a reception celebrating the paper's 100th anniversary. Visitors checked out the newspaper offices, perused bound volumes of back issues and found time to catch up with old friends. Team spirit was in order on Saturday when alumni rallied before the game against USC at the tailgate party cosponsored by the School and The Emerald. Finally, a visit from SOJC alum Ann Curry, '78, rounded out the
weekend. A news anchor for NBC's "The Today Show," Curry emceed
the Saturday evening "Because of You" campaign celebration at
Mac Court thanking donors and friends for capital campaign contributions
of more than $240 million.
