Celebrates Media Ethics
Ethics was front and center in a number of ways last week when
the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) presented its
annual Ruhl
Lecture as well as the 2005
Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism.
The school also hosted Colloquium 2005 in Applied Media Ethics, “Caring in the Media,” part of a series of 10 annual colloquia held across the nation.

Bivins awarded Williams Fellowship
At the SOJC, Professor Tom Bivins is a leader in using technology. In the mid-eighties he was one of the first faculty members to learn desktop publishing. In the mid-nineties, he designed the first SOJC website. Earlier this year, he created an online tool for the ethics component of the school’s Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism. According to SOJC web statistics, Bivins’ course websites are among the most popular sites on the school’s webpage.
The university has noticed.

Extreme
News-Ed!
Earlier this month, thirty-five news-editorial students experienced "Xtreme
News-Ed." This one-credit short course was coordinated by
SOJC Assistant Professor Kathy Campbell and taught by five top
Northwest editors, four from The Spokesman-Review in Spokane
(all SOJC alums) and one from The Statesman Journal in Salem.

Documentaries net three out of four NW Emmy nominations
When the nominations for the 42nd Annual Northwest Emmy Awards
were announced in April, SOJC student producers took an unprecedented
three of the four nominations in the Student Emmy award category.

 JAC
Springs into Action
When the school’s Journalism Advancement Council (JAC)
met for its semi-annual meeting on May 13, the focus was on the
school’s undergraduate programs. JAC members met with
the school’s Undergraduate Affairs Council (UAC) to discuss
planned curriculum review as well as plans for assessment of undergraduate
programs.
