1950

LaMott Fisher was recently honored with an honorary life membership from the California Association of Realtors for his contributions and commitment to his profession as a realtor in San Francisco.

Jim Wallace, '50

Jim Wallace, '50, was recently elected president of the Cosmos Club. The Cosmos Club, founded in 1878 in Washington, D.C., elects members based on scholarship, creative genius or intellectual distinction. Jim Wallace served as a foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal and U.S. News and World Report.

In 1983, Wallace returned to the United States and worked as Senior Editor of International News for U.S. News and World Report. Wallace serves on the School's Journalism Advancement Council and served on the UO Law School's Board of Visitors. In 1999, he was inducted into the Hall of Achievement.



Gretchen Grondahl Edgren visited campus in May to celebrate her 50th reunion with the class of '52 and make keynote remarks for her returning classmates. After graduation from the J-School with Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board Society honors, Edgren worked at The Oregonian for nine years, then at The San Juan Star for two years.

Edgren secured a job with Playboy Magazine in 1967 and spent 25 years working there. She retired as senior editor in 1992, has authored several books and still serves as a contributing editor. 1958

Charles Mitchelmore visited the J-school this spring just prior to retiring in May from the International Herald Tribune in Paris, France. Mitchelmore served as Deputy Editor of the paper since 1986. Mitchelmore and his wife will continue to live in Paris.

1969

Antonius CM Heijmen, after 14 years as a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, coming from the Coopers&Lybrand side, has recently decided to retire at 57. He looks forward to different experiences, including venture capital, board memberships and possibly teaching. Throughout his career, Heijman has been involved in international business issues, conducting business in more than 30 countries worldwide.

1973

After a six-month search, the Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Wash., named Steven Smith as its new editor. Smith has 27 years of experience as a journalist. Most recently he served as editor of the Statesman Journal in Salem. He began his new position July 15.

1975

Daniel A. Nye is currently posted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he has been working for four years as managing attorney of one of Saudi Arabia's largest law firms. He has fond memories of his time at the UO during the seventies. He states that working in the field of law during this "stunning time in the Middle East" has frequently brought to mind the teachings of Professor Max Wales on the constant challenge of saving one's principles. He hopes that he and his classmates will remain grateful and mindful of Professor Wales' sage advice.

Jim Pensiero accepts the Wall Street Journal's Pulitzer Prize

Jim Pensiero, UO '75, accepts the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting on behalf of the staff of The Wall Street Journal from George Rupp, president of Columbia University, at the Pulitzer awards lunch on Thursday, May 30, at Columbia, New York City. Mr. Pensiero is vice president, news operations, for The Wall Street Journal and recently established a technology fund endowment in the J-School.


1978

John Henderson, a sports writer for The Denver Post, is taking a one-year sabbatical in Rome where he is doing free-lance travel writing.

Community Radio

1979

Francis Kasoma MA, who had been teaching journalism at the University of Zambia in Africa, recently had his latest book on community radio published. Kasoma died of a heart attack June 7, 2002.


 

John Steinbreder John Steinbreder, '79, visited the School in May to speak with reporting students. He is a senior writer for Golfweek magazine and the author of six books, the most recent of which is Golf Rules and Etiquette for Dummies.

1980

Jerry Drelling recently started his own public relations consulting firm, Jerry Drelling Communications, LLC in Honolulu. The company will specialize in image building, government and community relations, issues management, crisis communications, and publicity for events and news products. Prior to opening his firm, Drelling was at KGMB-TV in Honolulu. He has recently announced his candidacy for Honolulu City Council.

1981

Eric Malin is living in Portland where he is a board member of the Red Rose School, an alternative school for activists. He also volunteers in marketing and fund raising for the Flying Focus Video Collective, which videotapes progressive-related events in the Portland area.

1983

Aaron Kirk Douglas is director of client services for Miller Nash, LLP (Oregon's third largest law firm), which won a first place award from the Legal Marketing Association at its annual awards banquet. The award was in the "Electronic Media" category, which included videos, CD-ROMS, and intranets in addition to Web sites. Douglas was previously a radio news reporter at KPNW AM/FM in Eugene and TV news writer at KIRO TV in Seattle.

1984

Dr. Dane S. Claussen is editor of the recently published Sex, Religion, Media and is currently writing his fourth and fifth books, Anti-intellectualism by the American Media: Magazines and Higher Education and Standing for Excellence at Community Newspapers.

1993

Libby Dowsett reports that she "just took a step up at the CBS station in Medford." She is now co-anchor for the 6pm and 11pm news. Dowsett says, "My husband, who is from Southern Oregon, started a dot.com a few years back. Life is good."

1995

Donovan Dela Cruz was recently named as director of marketing for Watermark Publishing in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is co-author of the best-selling dining guides The Okazu Guide—Oh, 'Cause You Hungry! and The Puka Guide—Oahu's Hole-in-the Wall Restaurants and writes a monthly food column for The Hawaii Herald.

Sean Smith was named west coast editor of Premiere magazine in Los Angeles. Smith was the 1996 editor of the School's award-winning Flux magazine. He later received a master's degree in Journalism from Columbia University.

1997

Ed Suwanjindar is working in product marketing for Mobile Devices (Pocket PC and Smartphone) at Microsoft.

1998

After graduating, Mark Hemingway moved to Washington, DC. He worked at the editorial page of USA TODAY. He left to take a job as a staff writer and reporter at the American Spectator. When the Spectator closed its Washington office, he took a job doing press and editing scholarly work at Hudson Institute. Hemingway will leave that job at the end of June to write a book on the anti-globalization movement funded by a grant from The Phillips Foundation.

1999

Heidi Loranger, '99, electronic media production, is working for KTVA News as a reporter in Anchorage, Alaska.

Jennifer Casey is working as a publicist for the Professional Bowlers Association. After starting the position in January, she joined the PBA tour on the road. She handles media relations and travels during the season. She lives in Seattle, and hopes to make it down to Eugene for a couple of football games before she goes on the road again.

In April, Ted Grafe joined Blattel Communications, a full-service marketing and public relations agency based in San Francisco. He will act as an account executive. Prior to joining Blattel Communications, Grafe was an account executive with Strategy Associates in Foster City, where he provided client and media relations expertise to the business-to-business, consumer and technology markets. His clients included ACCPAC International, Inc., Siemens Medical Solutions, Gilian Technologies, Inc., SeeCommerce, CMP Media, Inc., PowerMarket Inc., and Hansen's Natural Corporation.

Ryan Parker is teaching English to children in Seoul, South Korea, and traveling into Northern Asia's hinterlands. His plan is to return to UO and get a graduate degree in Special Education.

Isaac Szymanczyk is working for SAIF Corporation in the public affairs department. He writes and edits print and web publications for both internal and external audiences.

2000

Fahad al-Ibraheem is working for Kuwait-base Global Investment House in the marketing department. For the past year and half, he has worked for the Kuwait news agency Kuna in the news desk.

Amy Goldhammer has been promoted to Assistant Editor of Shape Magazine. Her main focus is travel and outdoor adventure. If she's not in the office, she's out in the world somewhere traveling around and testing cool gear. Somehow, she hasn't melted in the southern Calif. heat.

Matthew Landan began a new job in February with Deutsche Telekom, the leading German telecommunications company (and owner of Voice Stream in the US). He is writing "news stories" (PR) for their international web site.

2001

Erica Munson has accepted an account coordinator position with Waggener Edstrom, a high-tech public relations agency in Portland. She currently works on the agency's Rapid Response Team, servicing reactive press requests for one of their clients, Microsoft.
