A reception on March 10 at the Florence Events Center celebrated the work of SOJC photojournalism students.

The Center invited and sponsored the exhibit, titled "Through Eugene Eyes: The World as Seen through the Eyes of UO Photojournalism Students."

Associate Professor Julianne Newton and Adjunct Assistant Professor Rick Williams curated the work with the help of students Heather McConochie, Kevin Griffith, Arianna Gouveia, Kara Winters, Monica Valenzuela and Shelly Bohlman.

Professor Newton introduced the show by describing the process her students underwent to produce their work: "Photojournalism means reporting with a camera," she said. "However, the process of visual reportage does not focus on the type of camera or light-recording system used. The real process of visual reportage requires the trained and sensitive eye of a human being who is dedicated to showing the world its self." Student photographs explored subjects such as homelessness and cross-cultural experiences.

"Our patrons were very impressed with the quality of work and professionalism of the young students," said Lucille Herr, gallery chair for the FEC. "We'd love to have them back."
