2005 NW Journalism ConferenceSOJC to co-sponsor 2005 NW Journalism Conference

The SOJC will co-sponsor the 2005 Northwest Journalism Conference, coming Sept. 17-18 to the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.  The conference is dedicated to the advancement of education and knowledge among freelance, staff and student journalists. SOJC faculty members join award-winning writers and editors (including Pulitzer-Prize winners Nigel Jaquiss of Willamette Week and Alex Tizon of the L.A. Times) to offer sixteen comprehensive courses in this two-day event, which also includes a media fair, press conferences, and networking opportunities. Eleanor Clift, panelist for "The McLaughlin Group," contributing editor for Newsweek, and Washington, D.C. bureau chief for FOX, will be the keynote speaker.

Dean Gleason and Lorry Lokey Lokey Gift launches SOJC George S. Turnbull Portland Center

A former student of George S. Turnbull has contributed $4.5 million to the SOJC’s Portland Initiative. Portland native Lorry Lokey, CEO of Business Wire, has chosen to name the Portland Program for his former mentor, who served as the dean of the School of Journalism and was a member of the faculty for thirty-one years. The gift from Lokey, a Stanford graduate, was announced at a press conference at the UO Portland Center of July 11.

Class of 2005 is largest everClass of 2005 is largest ever

SOJC enrollment has been steadily on the rise. In 2002-03, the school awarded 346 baccalaureate degrees. In 03-04, 371. And this year, the SOJC expects to award 383 bachelor's degrees completed during the 2004-05 school year.

Tom Wheeler Tom Wheeler's BIG book

Since its release in spring of 2004, Tom Wheeler’s book, The Stratocaster Chronicles: Celebrating 50 Years of the Fender Strat (Hal Leonard) has sold more than 35,000 copies, has been published in German, and later this summer, will be released in Japanese.  Recently, Vintage Guitar magazine named it “Book of the Year” for 2004.

Hard work and a dedication to journalism have already proved rewarding for SOJC junior Parker Howell, whose hard work earned him a coveted spot at the Statesman-Journal as a Snowden Intern this summer as well as the title of Editor-in-Chief of the Oregon Daily Emerald for the coming school year.
