Lokey Gift launches SOJC George S. Turnbull Portland Center

SOJC’s Portland Center named for George S. Turnbull

A former student of George S. Turnbull has contributed $4.5 million to the SOJC’s Portland Initiative. Portland native Lorry Lokey, CEO of Business Wire, has chosen to name the Portland Program for his former mentor, who served as the dean of the School of Journalism and was a member of the faculty for thirty-one years. The gift from Lokey, a Stanford graduate, was announced at a press conference at the UO Portland Center of July 11.. The Portland program will be called the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication George S. Turnbull Portland Center, after the former Seattle Post-Intelligencer­ copyeditor who came to the School of Journalism in 1917 and would spend more years here than any other faculty member to date. Turnbull, who taught reporting and editing, is remembered as a devoted and kind teacher who helped his students transition from the university to their own journalism careers. He served as dean of the School of Journalism from 1944 to 1948, strengthening the foundations set forth by Eric Allen.
