Ted Grafe is working for Strategy Associates, Inc., a high technology public relations agency in the Silicon Valley. He married Courtney Andersen (UO Arts and Sciences 99) on July 15. Garret Jaros graduated in the news/editorial sequence in December and was hired as the environmental reporter for The News-Review in Roseburg. David Lamarche is director of Internet Services for Z100 and three other Portland radio stations. He travels to Eugene weekly with his mobile DJ service, Jock in a Box. Jason Plemons was a copy editor for the Salinas Californian for a brief time. Now, he is a reporter for The Clovis Independent, covering education and the police beats as well as writing community-based features. Lia Maria Salciccia is a general partner and the marketing director of Divine Infidel, purveyors of ritual tools and magical objects. Shes started her own publishing company, smite!press, specializing in books about esoteric spirituality and transforming your life through your own magick powers. She lives in Somerville, Mass. Salciccia finds being an entrepreneur challenging, rewarding, and an excellent opportunity to put all she learned in J-School to use. Tammy Salman accepted her first journalism-related position: a copy editing position with The Idaho Statesman in Boise. Matthew Shore is an account coordinator for Internet advertising agency Beyond Interactive, an independent subsidiary of Grey Advertising. He will be working in their San Francisco office. Michele Stephan is an account coordinator for the health and technology department at a PR firm in San Diego.
Mark Shizuo Tsuchiya is currently working as public relations coordinator for Father Joes Villages, a national non-profit organization aimed at assisting the homeless. Sarah Wells attended New York University Summer Publishing Institute. She is a production coordinator at Conde Nast. Yii Yang Wu works as an account executive at BBDO Worldwide in Taiwan, serving two main clients: ICI Paints & FedEx. 1998 After a lot of moving around, Greg Arrowood made his way to Portland. Since then he has been employed by Adidas (International). His current position is global communications manager for the basketball category. Elizabeth M. Beeler is the affiliate program coordinator at 800.COM in Portland. Heather Davis is special assistant to the president and deputy director of presidential scheduling at the White House. At the Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal, Joel Gorthy edits and publishes the state fire service newsletter, The Gated Wye. He also takes part in the development of statewide fire safety education campaigns and recently became webmaster. Gorthy adds, Greetings to my peers from Flux 97wherever they may be! Shelley Lynne Jelinek is currently working as a staff writer at The Pilot, her hometown newspaper in Brookings,. As of February of this year, Heather Moye has veered back to the PR life and joined Phase Two Strategies as an assistant account manager. She says that she is putting those PR skills from the J-School to good use. 1997 Remzi Bajrami is the president & founder of WorldPrivacy, Inc: www.world privacy.com provides free services to help consumers reduce unwanted junk mail, annoying telemarketing calls and unsolicited e-mail spam while building a true permission marketing network controlled entirely by the member. Edward Barrett married Vibeke Schurch in October, 1998. Vibeke currently runs a home-based internet marketing firm. Barrett started Sunrise Promotions and currently does promotions and PR for AT&T and DirectTV in the State of Washington. Marjorie (Johnson) Barritt married James Barritt in March, 1998 and then moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. Jeremy Mason is the interactive advertising manager at workz.com, a start-up (pre-IPO) internet company. He is in charge of contacting national advertisers, developing relationships and selling advertising to them. Mason started this job in December after four years at (Puget Sound) Business Journal. Tiffany Anne Smith recently began working at the (Seattle) Post-Intelligencer after more than a year at the (Norfolk)Virginian-Pilot 1996 atherine L. Amodei is coordinating PR and advertising plans for a large corporation based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She lives in Kirkland, Wash. Sky L. Barnhart was a reporter for the San Diego Community paper, The Beach & Bay Press, for one year. She was a reporter for Insurance Journal for one year and was recently promoted to managing editor. She says that her work is very challenging and excitinglots of traveling and networking. Luke Erickson and his wife Sheila became parents for the first time with the birth of their son, Jack Robert Erickson. Jennifer (Upshaw) Ruiz left her staff writer position at Chicago suburban weekly Pioneer Press Newspapers (owned by The Chicago Sun-Times) to accept a contract as a freelance reporter with The Chicago Tribune. She has been accepted into Northwestern Universitys Medill Graduate School of Journalism. Waived out of the first quarter due to professional experience, she will matriculate this fall and receive her master of science in journalism in June 2001. Melanie Sander coordinates the advertising at the OSU bookstore: newspaper ads to in-store promotions. Sander adds, Go, Beavs! In 1999, Kristi VanGorder graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Master of Arts in Education, Post-secondary Education. In June, 1999, she climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. She currently works at the University of NevadaReno. Matt Williams was recently named managing editor of World Traveler Magazine, the publication of Northwest Airlines. Following a trip to Thailand for the millennium celebration, he headed to Cairo for a feature story. 1995 Adam Kincher had a cartoon published in the Feb. 2000 issue of eBay Magazine. Hes won five ribbons (including two first-place awards) for photos displayed at the Coos County Fair in the past two years. Hes an active member of the Oregon Coast Photographers Association and serves on their board of directors. At 27, Kincher is the youngest member ever elected to the board. He recently had a photo show at the Coos Bay Public Library in February. 1994 Sheliza Mitha and Peter Nussbaum were married in October 1997 and are living in Vancouver, BC. Sheliza works in media relations at Tourism Vancouver and Peter owns a print shop. Rita-Lyn Sanders recently moved to Fort Collins, Colo., with her husband, Dr. Todd Sanders. She is a reporter with Duke Communications International, a company that published computer magazines including NEWS/400, Windows 2000 and DominoPro. 1993 James W. Breen is a copywriter for Planet Design Company in Madison, Wisc. After 18 months covering the semiconductors business for the trade newspaper Electronic News, Arik Hesseldahl has joined the staff of Forbes.com as semiconductors and technology writer. This will be his second time in the dot com world. His first such experience was at New Century Networks, where he worked on the now-defunct NewsWorks.com website. 1992 Mark Taylor and his wife, Robin Rose 93, welcomed their first child, Kiana Lee, on November 14th. Sydney Sallabanks, her husband, Rex, and their five-year old daughter, Chloe, enjoy the outdoor life in Idaho. Sydney works flexible hours and takes mountain bikes in the spring. She also teaches spinning and yoga. 1991 Susie Bodman has been working at the (Corvallis) Gazette-Times for a year now. Last November, she was awarded a fellowship to attend the New Horizons in Science briefing sponsored by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. Also, Bodman continues to work on her masters in Physical Anthropology/Faunal Analysis at OSU part-time. (She still says Go Ducks!) She hopes to complete her thesis next year. After 10 years of working in advertising at local newspapers, Kristi Strother returned to college for her masters degree in English/Literature. Shes currently a graduate student at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. For the winter/spring semester, she taught at the local high school. 1990 Wendy (Morris) Andrew returned to Portland from northern California with her husband to continue work in the full-time ministry for the Portland Church of Christ. Adam Peck is currently in the electronic media field in Seattle, Wash. After completing UOs MBA program in 1999, Paul Swangard took a marketing position at Intel where he now manages programs targeted at small businesses. He still freelances for Fox Sports to keep the skills sharp should the high-tech industry collapse (wink). Scott D. Wyland is working a newly created beat covering real estate high tech and other business-related issues for The Olympian in Olympia, Wash. 1987 David Coate spent more than 10 years in technical library services and then joined a software start-up in Portland. He is currently working as a project manager for Go.com. He encourages advertising and journalism majors to check out career opportunities and internships at Go.com! Coates is living in Seattle, which is enjoyable and interesting, in spite of the fact that it is located in the very heart of Husky land. Beth (Bushey) Drennen and her husband, Bryan, welcomed Maxwell Patrick Drennen July 9, 1999. Beth left her job at the (Hillsboro) Argus, where she has worked for 11 years, to stay at home with Max and his sister Allie, 3. Beth was also recently appointed to the Hillsboro Library Board. Craig Loughridge and his wife, Suzanne, now have four children. He recently received his real estate agent license and is working with TriWest GMAC Realty in Oregon City, specializing in residential sales and property management. 1986 Tom Henderson has been a reporter for the Polk County Itemizer Observer for seven years. His wife, Virginia, is the editor of the paper. They have a son, Sam, 4, and a daughter, Alexis, 15. 1985 Linda (Buchman) Bialla is the owner of Triathlon Apparel Company, the mother of three children and a long distance triathlete. She did the 1999 Ultraman World Champion-ships (6.2 mile swim, 261 mile bike, 52.4 mile run) winning the Womens Division. 1984 Dane Claussen is an assistant professor of communication and mass media at Southwest Missouri State University and the editor and co-author of The Promise Keepers: Essays on Masculinity and Christianity, released in late November by McFarland & Co., Inc. Cathy Curran is the group annuity administration representative for The (Milwaukie, Ore.) Standard. She has been volunteering for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Portland for more than two years and has had several stories published. 1983 Kevin Lamb is working across the street from UO in the Riverfront Research Park for Dynamix (the parent company for Sierra On-Line.) He has been managing the development of marketing communications materials (packaging, advertising, collateral) since 1993. Sierra is one of the worlds largest publishers of computer gaming software. 1981 Deb Banister was recently promoted to vice president of programs for Junior Achievement, where she teaches kids about business (K-12 programs taught in schools by business volunteers). Deb has three children: Danny, 13; Tess, 11; and Luke, 9. They teach her the business of being a mom. Eric Malin completed a grueling seven-and-a-half year stint as circulation manager for the Oregon Business Media-owned Oregon Business Magazine in early 1999. He spent the next year doing a combination of recuperating, looking for a new job, re-assessing his abilities and interests, and just plain goofing off. He recently started as a communications specialist for the Mountain Park Home Owners Association. 1979 Greg Bond is celebrating 13 years with OPB. Bond shoots documentaries around the world, including Nerds 2.01A Brief History of the Internet for PBS. He is a regular shooter/editor for The News Hour. Last year, he was the director of photography for a Spanish language educational series for McGraw-Hill Publishers, shot in Spain and Mexico. This year, he is continuing the series with a French project, shooting in Martinique and France. Locally, Bond contributes to Oregon Field Guide, Seven Days and Oregon Art Beat. Andre LeDoux has been invited to join the University of Washington Playwriting and Screenwriting Advisory Board. LeDoux is currently co-president of the Northwest Screenwriters Guild (www.nwsg.org) and was the first Grand Prize Winner of the Washington State Screenplay Competition. 1978 John Ray, assistant news director at KOIN in Portland, recently won an International Telly Award for Best Fine Arts Programming of the past 20 years for a 1997 Special on the 100th Anniversary of the Oregon Symphony. Ray is marrying Elizabeth Ames in August. 1977 After nine years as executive business editor of the (Albany, N.Y.) Times Union, Alan D. Abbey moved to Jerusalem last summer. Initially intending a six-month sabbatical, he and his familty have decided to stay (for now). He freelanced for Bloomberg News and The Jerusalem Post, but is now senior business editor of Virtual Communities Inc., a pure-play Internet company with a number of websites, the biggest of which is www.virtualjerusalem.com. Abbey would love to hear from SOJC graduates from his year or any UO graduates in Israel. Georgia Freshwater is the principal partner at Freshwater Exporters, LLC, an export management company that exports surgical supplies to Europe, Australia and South America. She and college sweetheart, Dennis Woods (UO Architecture, 76) have a 6-year-old son, whos now in kindergarten. The Northern California Media Directory is the latest title to be published by Big Yellow Publishing, Michael Kestens home business. Big Yellow also publishes media directories for Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Kesten is also beginning his fourth year as communications director for the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association. This year, he was elected to the board of directors of the PRSSA, Portland Chapter. After 15 years as the public information coordinator and communications strategist for Republicans in the Washington House of Representatives, Michael Neeld recently became public affairs director of the Washington Health Care Association, a statewide organization representing long-term care providers and facilities. He is responsible for public and media relations, as well as serving as chief legislative lobbyist. 1975 Lee Siegel, science editor at The Salt Lake Tribune, has co-authored his first book with University of Utah geophysicist, Robert Smith. Windows into the Earth: The Geologic Story of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks was published by Oxford University Press. 1974 Lester Freidman and his wife, Katlin, have joined Coldwell Banker Morris Real Estate in Bend. They specialize in residential properties and recently returned from Las Vegas where they participated in the Coldwell Banker International Business Conference. Theo M. Widdershoven is currently working as the head of Marketing for the State Forestry Service in the Netherlands. 1971 After teaching in Coos Bay School District #9 for 24 years, Jean (McBride) Carter retired to pursue a second career in freelance writing and nature photography. She is a regular contributor of articles to Northwest regional magazines with cover shots for Oregon Coast, Oregon Outside, and Northwest Travel. She has done photos for several calendars including the prestigious internationally published Inner Reflections. 1970 Daniel L. Borsyk launched an email newsletter covering private and public education. He encourages SOJC alums to preview an edition by sending an email to educationallyspeaking@hotmail.com. 1968 Boeing Communications Manager Cheryl Ann Addams just returned from an around-the-world marketing tour. Addams showed off the 757-300, the largest Boeing single-aisle airplane, to news media and airline customers in 16 cities in the U.S., Europe, China and Taiwan. The tour, which lasted three weeks, followed two months of intensive planning and coordinating with PR consultants around the world. This is one of the highlights (thrills!) of her 32-year career in journalism and public relations. 1967 Shelton A. Gunaratne is a professor of Mass Communications at Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minnesota. He recently finished the Handbook of the Media in Asia, which complements the work of the Euromedia Research Group on the media in Western Europe. 1966 Robert McCurtain is President of WallStreetReality.Com, a financial analysis website designed for high net-worth and institutional investors. The website was recently selected by the Institutional Division of Fidelity Investments as a product for its institutional clients. 1963 After 23 years as a fundraising executive with United Way organizations, Professor Emeritus Arthur Emig returned to school and received his M.A. in 1988, and Ph.D. in 1991 in Communications from the University of Florida. Emig then taught Mass Communications at the University of South Alabama until his retirement in June 1998. Hes currently living in Mexico, writing and working as a volunteer teacher of English to second-graders. 1962 In 1994, after having taught at National Chengchi University as professor of law, Justice Vincent W. Sze was appointed to the Constitutional Court. His appointment is for nine years, expiring in 2003. 1958 After several great years, James E. Carter sold The York Weekly to Courier Publications and joined them as editor-at-large, writing occasional articles and columns for their nine Maine papers. 1956 Gordon R. Rosss Anthology of Ghost Stories was published by The Fiction Works (http://www.fictionworks.com ) His e-book, Tales from Tidy Vale will soon be released in audio. He is currently teaching art and illustration. 1952 Martel Scroggin has been commissioned to write an article for the Oregon Historical Society about early central Oregon pioneers George Roba and the Paulina Sheepshooters. 1946 Patricia L. (Beuttel) Backlund received the Presidents Award for Literary Excellence 2000 for Poetry in America at the Millennium: The Best Poems and Poets of the 20th Century. Her poems are featured on the internet at http://www.poetry.com and on http://www.cader.com. 1942 Fred O. May and his wife, Joyce, have retired three times, most recently in 1992. They are snowbirds, living in Tucson, Ariz. in winter and Issaquah, Wash. in summer. The Mays report they still lead a reasonably active life, but have slowed up a bit. 1938 Clayton S. Sheldon started TV Life magazine in 1952. The publication was purchased by TV Guide in 1955. He retired in 1986.
