Four receive awards for ethics in journalism
Two student journalists, the entire news staff of the Los Angeles Times and a small community newspaper were honored at the first Annual Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism May 10.

Young people entering journalism today lack ambition. They're more interested in starting salary, pay raises and vacations than they are in careful, thorough reporting. They know little about current events and less of history. They're glamour-seekers. They fancy themselves writers, but they can't even spell.

During a New Year’s broadcast covering festivities in Times Square, CBS News superimposed its digitally created logo over a sign sponsored by rival NBC, raising eyebrows among journalists and viewers alike. The incident was one of many in recent years in which fictionalized photos or broadcast images appeared without disclosure in purportedly nonfiction viewing environments. What will be the effect of this increasingly common practice upon the credibility of visual journalism?
