B.J. Noles, Corrine Nelson, Les Anderson, Terry Anderson and Lee Nelson celebrate the induction of the late Lyle Nelson, ’41, into the SOJC Hall of Achievement.

Faculty members, industry professionals, students and alumni gathered October 29 to commemorate the accomplishments of four former students and one former faculty member of the School of Journalism and Communication.

The second class of the School’s Hall of Achievement was inducted during a celebratory evening at Eugene’s Downtown Athletic Club. The evening’s program honored the magnitude of influence and accomplishment achieved by the new class.

Drawn from a pool of more than 58 nominees and continuing the legacy of excellence established by last year’s 14 honorees, the inductees were chosen for their extraordinary range of professional accomplishments and their exemplary contributions to their communities. The 1999 honorees are Harry Glickman,’48, Lyle Nelson,’41, Dan Wieden, ’67, Jim Wallace,’50, and John Hulteng.

In explaining how difficult the selection process was for him and the other members of the 1998/99 Selection Committee, SOJC Dean Tim Gleason pointed to the collective achievements of the first two classes as a powerful testimony to the School’s tradition of excellence.

  Jim Wallace and Fred Taylor
Jim Wallace, ’50, joins one of last year’s honorees, Fred Taylor, ’50, as a member of the School of Journalism and Communication Hall of Achievement.

“Their lives exemplify the values that are central to our mission,” he said.

UO Vice President of Public Affairs and Development Duncan McDonald acknowledged the inductees’ impact on the future of the School as well.

"Recognizing this impressive level of achievement not only honors our history, but it also points to a future cloaked in a tradition of personal and professional growth," said McDonald. "Our honorees make us proud, and their legacy continues to inspire us all."

Portraits of the 19 members of the Hall of Achievement are currently on display outside the Willis S. Duniway Journalism Resource Room in Allen Hall. Construction of the Hall of Achievement Seminar Room, made possible by a gift from the Baker family and The Register-Guard, will make possible a permanent display.
