Camia
In May, Catalina Camia,
the Freedom Forum's diversity fellow, visited the SOJC, where
she held a mentoring session with students of color and discussed
the importance of diversity in the newsroom. Camia, who is on leave
as a Washington correspondent for The Dallas Morning News,
is past president of the Asian American Journalists Association
and currently serves as a board member for UNITY, Journalists of
Color, a coalition of black, Asian, Hispanic and Native American
journalists. 
Ruhl
Lecture
In a visit to
campus in May, Nick Kristof, the 2001 Ruhl Lecturer, urged
his audience to struggle with the complexity of ethical
dilemmas facing working journalists and to think about the
practical realities of the profession.
Nick Kristof is
a columnist covering the war in Afghanistan for The New
York Times. He spent most of his career as a foreign correspondent,
and witnessed Tiananmen Square. He and his wife, Sheryl
Wu Dunn, together won a Pulitzer Prize for their reporting

Night
At Ad Night in May, keynote
speaker Steve O'Leary, '69, of the T&O Group of Irvine,
Calif., discussed technology in advertising. As part of the celebration,
the Ad Team presented their award-winning campaign, members of Allen
Hall Advertising showed an overview of their work, and advisers
distributed a number of student awards for advertising excellence.
O'Leary returned
this winter with T&O Group partner, John Most, to give an advertising
strategy workshop in the School.

2001
On the morning
of June 16, the sounds of bagpipes filled the air as more
than 1,500 proud, camera-toting family members and friends
gathered on the south lawn of Knight Library to watch the
School of Journalism and Communication's graduating classthe
largest at the Universityreceive their hard-earned
diplomas. Grateful for the warm, dry weather, faculty members
from each sequence distributed awards to more than a dozen
students for their outstanding contributions to the School.

Chandler
Lecture
David Broder, Pulitzer Prize-winning
columnist for The Washington Post, delivered the Robert W.
Chandler lecture at The Bulletin in Bend on November 29, 2001.
More than 400 people attended the lecture entitled "Governing
in a Changed World: The Politics of Leadership since September 11th."
The lecture endowment was established in 1991 by the late Robert Chandler,
editor-in-chief of The Bulletin.
