Al Stavitsky speaking   University offers scholarships to Oregon's best
Unwilling to see the state's best and brightest high school students head elsewhere for college, the University of Oregon is rewarding their academic achievement with a new scholarship program. Under the Dean's Scholarships program, entering freshmen from Oregon who have a 3.6 or higher grade point average will receive scholarships worth $1,000 per year. Oregon high school valedictorians and students who graduate with a 4.0 or better will receive $2,000 per year.

But the news media were affected by this spectacle, too, in ways maybe just as important to how citizens of the 21st century learn about political issues and what they think about the media and the democratic process.

Josh Miller   Visitors share 'real world' experience
Students and faculty at the SOJC were treated to visits from an impressive assortment of guest lecturers throughout winter term.
