National media shine spotlight on the School
Students' work is recognized by advertising professionals, and the dean goes Hollywood

The prestigious One Club for Art & Copy recognized the creative efforts of School of Journalism and Communication advertising students Cori Poletto and Karl Schroeder in its publication, one.a magazine.

Poletto, a senior, and Schroeder, a junior, created the "Eternal" campaign for UO Campus Recycling to promote buying post-consumer recycled products.

Their first step in attracting the audience with this campaign was to omit the recycling logo, which they felt consumers tend to ignore because of its familiarity or tend to be flagged by it in a negative way.

In including Poletto and Schroeder's work in the "causes" section of the publication, one. a magazine noted: "This graphic design is clean, clear and unconventional -- and devoid of the logo. It communicates clearly and appropriately to the audience."

SOJC Professor Bill Ryan, who recommended the students' work to One Club, said their campaign's strength lies in a minimal but eye-catching design that is "smart and unique enough to be showcased in a fine magazine, along with work from the finest advertising professional creatives in the world."

Tim Gleason isn't headed for Hollywood yet, but the dean of the School of Journalism and Communication did get a chance to exercise his on-camera talents for CBS this past term. The CBS This Morning team visited the SOJC in late January to record a spot for its daily morning show. Students in a video class taught by Warren Pease, the School's electronic media technical coordinator, watched as CBS producers planned and shot Gleason's appearance, which showed throughout the country in February during CBS This Morning.

As part of the 15-second clip, Gleason said, "The School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon in Eugene gives students the opportunity for high quality education while enjoying a wonderful quality of life."
